Tiny Wings’ simple yet fun mechanics have captured the hearts of app lovers world wide. At it’s heart, Tiny Wings is a simple game to play and involves a little bird belly-sliding down hills. It can be hard to play at first but here are some tips.

When going down a hill, touch the screen to make the bird slide down the hill. When you start to go up the hill, lift your finger off the screen to let the bird fly off the hill. It will usually take 2-3 tries before gaining enough momentum to soar through the air. When the bird starts to fall, touch the screen again to make it dive back into a hill so that it can gain more momentum. This is the tricky part because doing this too early or too late will make you lose all momentum, resulting in belly sliding down hills like at the start of the level.

You have to keep up a certain speed because slowing down will cause the sun to set. When the screen becomes nightime the game ends.

Review

Tiny Wings has so much more potential as a game though it is missing a few basic gaming elements.

To start off with, there is only one way you can play the game and that is hill diving while trying to run from the night. It would be much more fun if there were different modes of gameplay like an endless mode where you can take your time or a race mode where you have to get to the end of a level in a certain period of time.

Secondly, this game is missing power-ups. Hill diving can be addictive in the colourful islands of the game, but after about twenty levels or so, you start to get bored and wish that there were something else in the sky. Sure there are yellow and blue orbs on the ground but that’s not very interesting. Here are some of the power-ups that we at best1001apps would like to see:

• The Cloud-up: touch the clouds three times to get your bird a beard; makes decent much slower
• The Frog-up: touch this power-up to give your bird frog legs which will make it hop through the island for 30 seconds. If it reaches the big ramp which leads to the next island before the 30 seconds is up, it will return to normal. After 30 seconds, the bird will do a larger hop and the frog legs, will disappear so the player has enough time to decide on his/her next move while in the air.
• The Thunder-Cloud: turns your bird into a thunder bird. It’s jumps will be higher then usual and if the bird lands on a hill, the hill will break and the bird will soar thorugh the air all the while doing loud screeches.

Another thing we would like to see is level variety. The colourful hills add a nice touch but we would like to see different types of hills:

• A Speed Boost hill – landing on it will give you more speed.
• A bounce hill – landing on it will bounce you back into the sky.

Verdict

Nevertheless, Tiny Wings is a hate-it-until-you-learn-to-play-it-then-you-love-it game. We would love to see these adjustments in Tiny Wings 2.
